Look Taller, Slimmer and Curvier in the Anthropologie Pieced Column Dress by Bailey 44

This has been a brutal winter in the war I’ve been waging against my natural tendency to dress like a 12-year-old skater boy. Some battles, I won. Others, well, I fell back, retreating into my old routine of jeans and t-shirts.

Still, I feel like I’ve made a little progress here and there…

After the dust settles, when all is said and done, I think I’ll look back at the day I came across the Pieced Column Dress by Bailey 44 ($178) on the Anthropologie website as the turning point in the war — the day I took a major step toward dressing like a 30-something-year-old woman with a quirky sense of style.

It was the reviews that made the difference. So positive, so encouraging. They convinced me that this war could actually be won. People were talking about how the dress made them look taller, slimmer, curvier and cuter. Basically, they made it sound like the fabric equivalent of a minor miracle, so of course I had to try it on.

I drove down to the closest Anthropologie store and tried on the dress in Neutral Motif (it’s also available in Navy).

I was careful not to get my hopes up too high, though, remembering that stripes usually make me look wider and shorter, but I’ll be a monkey’s uncle — I think it had the opposite effect.

Man, I really love this dress. :) Everything about it except the price (and the fact that it’s dry-clean only).

I feel like I look 10 pounds lighter and three inches taller when I have it on, which must have to do with the design, with its stripes that zigzag at different angles. They seem to slim the tummy and highlight curves at the same time.

The gal who was helping me said that she’d seen a whole bunch of women try the dress on, and it looked good on everyone, women of all different body shapes and sizes.

So cool. And it’s even comfortable. Very comfortable. It’s made from rayon and spandex, so it’s soft and stretchy like a pair of yoga pants for your whole body.

I usually dress it down with boots and a denim jacket, but I also like the way it looks jazzed up with heels and a black blazer.

If you decide to try it on, check the sleeves and seams. Just in case. I read a few reviews from people who said that the dress fell apart on them quickly.

And if you do bring it home, keep your receipt. Even if you do have any problems, Anthropologie has a pretty generous return policy.

Great dress, but I wish it was cheaper…and that I could just throw it in the wash.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Onward to Friday! — and hopefully another day of this unseasonably warm weather. It’s been kind of surreal. I think it hit 75 today and felt almost like summer.

P.P.S. What are you up to this weekend? Doing anything fun?

Matching Your Eyeglasses and Your Makeup

For many women, wearing eyeglasses is a bit of a burden because wearing glasses means you have to pair your frames to match your outfit and you need to make sure your makeup matches so you don't look like a clown. In order to avoid the clown-look, many women opt for contact lenses because they think it makes the makeup application process easier. Unfortunately for them, they're missing out on today's hottest fashion accessory! Prescription eyeglasses have come a long way from what they used to be and from what they used to look like! For every frame color and shape, there's a makeup style that works perfectly! Let's explore the ways in which women can properly apply makeup to better fit their glasses!

Let's take a look at tortoise shell colored frames. They're that awesome mix of amber and brown - so what color eye shadow should you pair it with? Green! You can also opt for brown but it may blend it a bit too much. Choose a soft green like olive and accent your eyes with a forest or emerald green eyeliner. Stick to neutral bases everywhere else and a light pink stain for the cheeks. For your lips, opt for nude with a sheer pink-toned lip gloss. Steer clear of sparkles, though.

What about mauve, pink, and berry colored eyeglasses? Well, if you've chosen to take a stand and break out from the ordinary - you've done well - just don't do the same with your make up. Keep everything neutral and toned down. Try a gel liner in brown or black in a nice pin-up girl or cat-eye style that lays over a sheer cream or peach tone. You don't want to have your makeup battle your eyeglasses. A sheer pink blush will bode well but feel free to go a little brighter on your lips.

Feel like playing up your glasses a bit? If you have tinted lenses, you're going to need something on the bronze side to make your cheeks pop! A bronzer works perfectly but don't forget to highlight on the top of your cheekbones. Don't leave your lips bare! Put a little color on those pouty lips of yours - try berry or pink lip gloss with a high concentration of color for a little pop!

If you're rockin' the black plastic frames, there are three words you need to remember: drama is key. Your lips should be red - just make sure it's a matte finish! As for your eyes, choose a light shadow color - it can be a light gray, neutral brown, or just a sheer cream color. Then accent your eyes with a thick black liner - liquid is probably your best bet! Then add about three coats of jet-black mascara! Remember, drama is key! Additionally, your skin should be flawless and perfectly powdered - no shine!

Regardless of the color of your frame, it's important to remember that your makeup should not overpower your face or your prescription eyeglasses! They should complement each other, not look like your face is fighting in a color war. If your makeup is heavy, wear a simple pair of glasses frames. If your eye glasses are bright and powerful, tone down the makeup. These are words to live by!

How To Cure Dark Armpits

We go to great lengths to look after our armpits. Not only do we continuously throw on deodorants and antiperspirants in an effort to make them smell nice, but men and women alike spend time every day removing the area from that area. So after all that care is taken, a lot of men and women are discouraged to find that their armpitarea seems to chronically be darker than the rest of their body. This often leads to embarrassment, and even causes some men and women to completely avoid certain articles of clothing that would otherwise put their darkened armpits on display.
There are a number of reasons why the armpit area may be darker than the rest of your body, some of them being major health concerns. Some of these include:
  • Diabetes type II
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Tumors
  • Medications
Sometimes your armpits will appear darker than the rest of your body because you have fair skin and the hair growing beneath the surface is dark (try waxing as this will at least initially pull the dark hairs out from the root and the skin).
You can start getting rid of you dark armpit area today with some simple home remedies. One that you can do today is use a lemon. Cut a lemon so that you have a slice, and then rub it right over the armpit area. Lemons naturally lighten the skin, cleanse the skin, and they have antimicrobial properties which help prevent any continued darkening of your armpit area.
Alternatively, you can take aloe vera gel and rub it under your arm pits, or you can try using baking soda under your arms. The benefit to baking soda is that it not only can help lighten your armpits, but it will also help absorb any sweat and odor.
Another great way to try and treat your dark underarms yourself is to take fish oil supplements on a daily basis. You can find fish oil capsules in any grocery store or natural help food store.
It’s also important to keep the area as clean as possible and to wear clothing that is made from natural fibers. Excessive sweating or tight fitting clothing can be the cause behind your dark armpit woes, so try cleansing the armpit area twice a day and wear clothing that is made from cotton, wool, and other natural fibers.
If you are looking for a medical type of treatment for your dark underarms, there’s good news for you: you can receive over the counter treatments from your doctor. There are oral medications that you can take, such as isotretinoin, and prescription creams that contain vitamin A that can be applied to the area to help lighten up the skin.
Lastly, if none of the above seem to be helping, it is possible to opt for laser dermabrasion of the armpit area. This will greatly help reduce the darkening of your armpits.

Tattoo Safety Guidelines

They are creative. They are beautiful. They are trendy. They are tattoos. From being despised as the lot of rebels and hippies, a tattoo has now become almost a measure of one’s cool quotient.
However, before you begin to flaunt one, remember that you could be putting your health at risk. A tattoo, unless done following necessary prescriptions for sanitation and hygiene, can cause a serious infection. Don’t panic though. Just look for some basic pointers.
First things first. Don’t be impulsive with a tattoo. A permanent tattoo remains just that – permanent (laser surgeries can remove permanent tattoos but they are expensive). So to eliminate any possible future regrets, make sure that getting a tattoo is not a kneejerk decision.
Give it time. In the meantime, make enquiries abouttattoo artists in your town, visit their studios, and do a thorough check. If, after waiting for a couple of months, you still have a strong urge to acquire a tattoo, go for it!
Don’t be penny wise, pound foolish in case of a tattoo. You might find a tattoo parlour that etches designs for a lower fee but instead of trying to scrimp, ensure at what cost the parlour is cheaper. Don’t compromise with your health. A professional tattoo artist’s studioshould look and feel healthy.
If you doubt its dedication to hygiene and cleanliness, go for another parlour. A professional parlour will do whatever it can to inspire client confidence which begins with sanitation.
Do check whether the artist follows the routine meticulously using disposable syringes and containers, washing hands carefully, wearing latex gloves and disposing off the used materials. He should break and dispose the needle in front of you.
If you have any allergies or health issues, don’t forget to tell the tattoo artist about it. In some rare cases, the ink used for tattooing can cause a reaction. You are not done even after the tattoo has been etched. Strictly follow the advice of the tattoo artist.
While the dos suggest washing the tattoo with an anti-bacterial soap and cold water, and covering it with jelly or ointment to prevent dryness, the don’ts include not exposing your tattoo to the sun, not letting it dry, and not scratching it. Ready? Go for it.
